Merak and Sakteng, often referred to as the Twin Jewels of Eastern Bhutan, are remote and captivating regions long closed to outsiders, offering travelers the rare chance to explore two of the country’s least known valleys. While Merak is accessible via a dirt road, reaching Sakteng requires a two-day trek from Merak and a reasonable level of physical fitness. For those not inclined to trek, a visit to Merak village alone provides an insightful glimpse into the nomadic lifestyle of the Brokpa people. During your visit, you can engage in activities such as trekking to the sacred mountain of Jomo Kuengkhar, witnessing unique yak dances, or enjoying a performance of the famous nomadic opera, Ache-Lhamo. You’ll also have the opportunity to experience the warmth and simplicity of Brokpa hospitality, observe how their traditional attire is crafted from yak skin, and listen to captivating legends of the yeti, which remain deeply rooted in local folklore. Embark on a journey into the hidden valleys of Merak and Sakteng and uncover the untouched eastern wilderness of Bhutan.
